- What is a Wi-Fi modem and why do I need it?
-
A Wi-Fi modem is a special wireless receiver that allows users to better hear a Wi-Fi signal from indoors using special antenna technology and software. It is typically used to connect a single laptop or desktop computer.
- But can’t I just use the Wi-Fi capabilities built into my laptop to access the MetroFi network?
-
Yes you can. However the Wi-Fi capabilities within most laptops are typically low powered and aren’t well suited to receive faint signals or signals through obstacles like wall windows, trees and other obstructions. The Ruckus MetroFlex product was specifically designed to provide a reliable connection anywhere in the home and to automatically avoid Wi-Fi obstacles.
- What kind of configuration or installation is needed for the Ruckus MetroFlex device?
-
There is a setup guide included with the device. Setup is easy
and you can connect to the MetroFi Free Wireless Service in minutes. After powering the unit on, the only thing
required by the user is to connect your laptop or desktop computer to the
Ruckus MetroFlex device using the Ethernet cable supplied with the unit, follow the
setup guide and place the Ruckus with the rear of the of the device towards the
MetroFi Access Point.
- What are the LEDs on the device and what are they supposed to tell me?
-
The LEDs on the front of the unit are to provide information about the status of the power, wireless connection, signal quality and connection to your computer.
- What do I do if I can’t get it to work?
-
If you can’t the unit to work below are three possible problems:
-
the unit it too far away from a MetroFi node that is broadcasting a signal
-
your computer is not configured to automatically have an IP address assigned by the network (see picture)
-
there could be another problem with the device and you
should contact us for support.

Online support from Ruckus Wireless is readily available to remedy these problems. The best and most efficient way is to send an email describing your problem to: support@ruckuswireless.com.
- What is the port or plug for on the back of the unit?
-
There are two plugs on the back of the MetroFlex unit: the left plug is for power and the right plug is a RJ-45 Ethernet jack. The Ethernet jack is used to connect the MetroFlex to a single laptop or desktop computer. If multiple computers are required to access the Internet over the wireless connection, you can connect a multi-port hub or switch that will allow numerous computers to share the free MetroFi wireless connection.
